Drs Rick Lieber, Sam Ward and Jan Fridén perform biomechanical experiments on tendon transfer surgery at the Department of Orthopaedics, UCSD, March 2010. The aim of the study is to determine the safe joint positions for different tendon transfers relative to tension and risk of overstretching transferred muscles and tendons. Preliminary data indicate that the risk of overstretching connected tendons is less than previously believed. The results may change the postoperative rehabilitation protocols.
